93 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Château Lynch-Bages, a Fifth Growth of the 1855 Classification, has long been associated with a muscular, Cabernet-led expression of Pauillac. The 1996 comes from an especially successful Left Bank vintage and, at 30 years from harvest, has moved decisively into mature territory while retaining the freshness and structural definition that have carried it this far.
Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
Tasting Notes: Blackcurrant and dark cherry have evolved toward dried fruit and savory complexity, with pencil shavings, cedar, tobacco and mint joined by leather and earthy undertones. The palate is composed and distinctly Pauillac, with mature fruit, fine-grained tannins and a persistent mineral character giving shape to the finish.
Structure: Medium to full-bodied, with the once-firm Cabernet Sauvignon framework now substantially resolved. Fresh acidity and remaining tannic definition prevent the wine from feeling tired, while three decades of bottle age have brought a smoother, more integrated texture.
Drink Window: Now–2032. The 1996 is fully within its mature drinking window and should be enjoyed for its developed Bordeaux character rather than held in anticipation of greater fruit intensity. Sound, well-stored bottles can continue to hold, but provenance and storage history increasingly matter at this age.
Decanting: Stand the bottle upright for several hours before opening. Taste first, then decant gently for sediment if necessary; avoid prolonged aeration, as a mature 1996 is better allowed to develop gradually in the glass.
The 1996 Lynch-Bages is an appealing choice for anyone seeking mature Pauillac with genuine bottle-aged complexity rather than youthful power. It is particularly well suited to a classic dinner—roast beef, lamb, duck or simply prepared mushrooms—or as a vintage-year bottle for a significant anniversary or occasion.
