Château Lynch-Bages, a Fifth Growth of Pauillac, has long been admired for Cabernet-driven Bordeaux with the concentration and structure to age for decades. From the highly regarded 2005 vintage, this is now entering a compelling stage of maturity, retaining the dark-fruited power associated with Lynch-Bages while developing the cedar, tobacco and savory complexity of mature Pauillac.
Blend: 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot.
Tasting Notes: Cassis, blackberry and dark plum are layered with cedar, graphite, tobacco and earthy undertones. The palate remains concentrated and authoritative, with mature black fruit, savory spice and mineral notes carried through a long, structured finish; bottle age is beginning to bring greater integration and tertiary complexity.
Structure: Full-bodied and firmly built, with the substantial Cabernet Sauvignon core and tannic architecture characteristic of Lynch-Bages. Two decades of bottle age have softened the wine’s youthful power, but considerable structure remains, giving the 2005 both presence and continued cellaring potential.
Drink Window: Now–2040. The 2005 is firmly within its drinking window, offering an attractive intersection of retained fruit and emerging maturity, while well-stored bottles should continue to evolve for many years.
Decanting: Stand the bottle upright in advance to allow sediment to settle. Decant gently for sediment shortly before serving; with a mature wine of this age, avoid automatically giving it prolonged aeration and follow its development in the glass.
At twenty years of age, the 2005 Lynch-Bages offers the experience collectors look for in mature classified-growth Bordeaux: Pauillac structure still intact, but increasingly layered with the savory complexity that only bottle age can provide. A fitting bottle for a significant dinner or cellar selection, particularly alongside roast lamb, prime beef, duck or other simply prepared dishes that allow the wine to remain the focus.
