94 Points – Antonio Galloni, Vinous.
Castell’in Villa is a reference point for traditionally styled Chianti Classico, producing Sangiovese of notable structure and longevity from its estate in Castelnuovo Berardenga. The 2019 is an especially compelling rendition of the annata, combining the vintage’s depth and balance with the savory restraint and firm architecture that distinguish the estate.
Blend: 100% Sangiovese.
Tasting Notes: Sour cherry, red currant and wild strawberry lead into violet, orange peel and dried herbs, with tobacco, leather and earthy spice beginning to emerge with bottle age. The palate is focused and savory, with vivid red fruit, mineral undertones and fine tannins carrying through a persistent, classically dry finish.
Structure: Medium-bodied and firmly structured, with bright Sangiovese acidity and fine, persistent tannins providing the wine’s backbone. At seven years from vintage, the 2019 remains fresh and energetic, with its youthful structure beginning to integrate into a more complex and savory whole.
Drink Window: Now–2035. The 2019 can be enjoyed today with aeration, but Castell’in Villa’s track record for aging and the balance of this vintage make further cellaring particularly worthwhile.
Decanting: If opening now, decant for approximately 30–45 minutes to allow the red fruit, herbs and savory complexity to emerge. Serve slightly below room temperature in a generous glass.
For those who value Chianti Classico for Sangiovese rather than polish or oak, Castell’in Villa remains a particularly distinctive proposition. The 2019 offers enough maturity to enjoy now while retaining the freshness and structure for the cellar, and is a natural partner for bistecca alla Fiorentina, wild boar ragù, roast meats, mushrooms and aged Pecorino.
