98 Points – James Suckling
Château Pontet-Canet is a Fifth Growth (Cinquième Cru Classé) from Pauillac whose reputation has been built on meticulous vineyard management, biodynamic farming and a distinctive approach to winemaking. The outstanding 2020 Bordeaux vintage produced a wine of impressive concentration, combining the dark-fruit depth of Cabernet Sauvignon with remarkable freshness and finely polished tannins. Aged in a combination of French oak barrels and concrete amphorae, this is a compelling expression of modern Pontet-Canet: powerful, precise and firmly rooted in its Pauillac origins.
Blend: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot.
Tasting Notes: Concentrated blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry are complemented by peony, licorice, graphite and a touch of fresh mint. The palate is richly layered, revealing ripe black fruit, cocoa, subtle tobacco and finely integrated spice. A long, mineral-driven finish carries notes of crushed stone and savory herbs.
Structure: Full-bodied, with substantial concentration and exceptionally fine-grained tannins. The generous Merlot component contributes a supple, creamy mid-palate, while Cabernet Sauvignon provides the firm structure and freshness characteristic of Pauillac. Despite its richness, the wine remains focused, energetic and remarkably composed.
Drink Window: 2028–2045. Although the 2020 already displays considerable fruit purity and textural polish, several additional years of cellaring should allow its youthful structure to integrate and its aromatic complexity to develop. Well-stored bottles have the balance to reward extended aging.
Decanting: If opening before 2028, allow approximately 60–90 minutes in a decanter to reveal its fruit and soften its youthful tannins. As the wine matures, reduce aeration and decant primarily to remove any sediment.
Château Pontet-Canet 2020 is an excellent choice for Bordeaux collectors seeking a highly regarded Pauillac with both immediate appeal and meaningful cellaring potential. Its combination of concentrated fruit, mineral precision and polished structure makes it particularly rewarding alongside roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck or dishes featuring mushrooms and truffles. A bottle worth following over the next two decades.
