Weingut Goldatzel is a family-run estate in Johannisberg, one of the Rheingau’s historic centers of Riesling production. Its 2020 Johannisberger Kabinett Feinherb captures the region’s characteristic interplay of ripe orchard fruit, citrus freshness and mineral definition. With a gently off-dry profile, this is a particularly versatile Riesling, offering the delicacy of the Kabinett style alongside enough substance to accompany a wide range of dishes.
Blend: 100% Riesling.
Tasting Notes: Fresh green apple, white peach and ripe pear are joined by lemon zest, delicate floral notes and a suggestion of wet stone. The palate is lively and finely balanced, with juicy orchard fruit and a subtle touch of residual sweetness offset by refreshing acidity. Citrus and gentle mineral notes carry through a clean, persistent finish.
Structure: Light to medium-bodied, with bright acidity, modest alcohol and a delicate off-dry balance. The interplay between fruit sweetness and acidity gives the wine a refreshing, precise character without feeling austere or overtly sweet.
Drink Window: Now–2030. At six years of age, the wine is entering an appealing stage of development, with its youthful fruit beginning to acquire greater nuance. Well-stored bottles should continue to evolve gracefully over the next several years.
Decanting: Decanting is unnecessary. Serve chilled at approximately 46–50°F in a Riesling or medium-sized white wine glass, allowing the wine to warm slightly as its aromatics develop.
The 2020 Goldatzel Johannisberger Riesling Kabinett Feinherb is an excellent choice for those who appreciate Riesling with a measured touch of sweetness and a distinctly refreshing finish. Particularly well suited to Thai cuisine, lightly spiced seafood, roast pork and dishes with ginger or citrus, it also makes an inviting aperitif.
