Château Closiot brings an intriguing Barsac perspective to dry white Bordeaux under the direction of Jean-Marie and Maine Guffens. The 2023 Bordeaux Blanc draws primarily on younger Sémillon vines, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc and a small portion of Muscadelle, producing a fresh, textured white that emphasizes fruit purity rather than the richer barrel-aged character of the estate’s Le C Sec.
Blend: 60% Sémillon, 38% Sauvignon Blanc, with a small portion of Muscadelle.
Tasting Notes: Ripe pear, yellow apple and lemon lead the aromatics, with white flowers and a subtle herbal note adding lift. The palate is fresh and gently rounded, balancing orchard fruit and citrus with a lightly savory, mineral character and a clean, dry finish.
Structure: Medium-bodied, with Sémillon providing breadth and texture while Sauvignon Blanc contributes freshness and definition. Vinification in concrete preserves fruit clarity and gives the wine a composed, understated profile without overt oak influence.
Drink Window: Now–2029. Already drinking well, with enough freshness and Sémillon-derived texture to develop additional savory nuance over the next few years.
Decanting: No formal decanting is necessary. Serve moderately chilled and allow 10–15 minutes in the glass for the fruit and more subtle savory notes to emerge.
For drinkers interested in dry white Bordeaux beyond the familiar Sauvignon-led style, Château Closiot offers a particularly appealing alternative. Its Sémillon-driven texture, citrus freshness and restrained character make it versatile at the table, especially with shellfish, roast fish, poultry, creamy seafood dishes and soft cheeses.
