Gaja Rossj-Bass is a distinctive white wine from one of Piedmont’s most respected estates, demonstrating the potential of Chardonnay in a region better known for Barolo and Barbaresco. Named for Angelo Gaja’s daughter Rossana, the wine draws on vineyards in the Langhe and combines ripe fruit, measured richness and a fresh, mineral-driven character. The 2024 vintage offers a poised expression of the Gaja style, with the depth to accompany food and the precision to remain refreshing.
Blend: Predominantly Chardonnay, with a small proportion of Sauvignon Blanc traditionally included in the cuvée.
Tasting Notes: White peach, ripe pear and lemon zest are complemented by acacia blossom, toasted hazelnut and a subtle suggestion of spice. The palate is finely textured, with generous orchard fruit, fresh citrus and a restrained creamy quality. Bright acidity and a gently saline finish bring focus and persistence.
Structure: Medium-bodied, with a supple, polished texture balanced by lively acidity. Its combination of fruit concentration, subtle oak influence and mineral freshness creates a wine of depth without excessive weight.
Drink Window: 2026–2032. Enjoyable in its youth for its fresh fruit and elegant texture, with several years of careful cellaring likely to develop additional nutty and savory complexity.
Decanting: If opening young, allow 15–30 minutes in a decanter or generous white-wine glass to bring out its aromatic detail. Serve around 50–54°F rather than excessively chilled.
Gaja Rossj-Bass 2024 is a compelling choice for Chardonnay enthusiasts interested in a distinctive Piedmont interpretation of the variety. Its balance of richness and freshness makes it particularly rewarding with lobster, scallops, roast poultry, mushroom risotto and aged cheeses, while the Gaja name adds appeal for thoughtful gifting.
