Maison Verget, founded by Jean-Marie Guffens, has long brought an unusually exacting approach to Chardonnay in the Mâconnais. Grand Élevage is conceived as the more textured expression of Mâcon-Villages, with barrel fermentation and extended élevage giving the generous fruit of the southern Mâconnais additional depth while preserving freshness.
Blend: 100% Chardonnay.
Tasting Notes: Ripe pear, white peach and citrus open into white flowers, subtle tropical fruit and a restrained buttery note. The palate is rounded and silky, with orchard fruit and citrus framed by gentle oak nuances and a mineral freshness that becomes more pronounced through the finish.
Structure: Medium-bodied and supple, with a creamy, finely textured mid-palate balanced by fresh acidity and mineral definition. Barrel fermentation adds breadth without pushing the wine into an overtly oaky style.
Drink Window: Now–2029. Appealing young for its generous fruit and texture, with enough freshness to develop additional nutty and savory nuance over the next several years.
Decanting: No formal decanting is necessary. Serve moderately chilled and allow 10–15 minutes in a generous white-wine glass for the Chardonnay’s texture, fruit and subtle oak character to open.
Grand Élevage offers a particularly appealing route into serious white Burgundy, delivering the texture and careful élevage associated with more ambitious Chardonnay at an accessible appellation level. Its combination of ripe fruit, freshness and understated richness makes it well suited to roast chicken, scallops, richer fish dishes, mushrooms and creamy vegetable preparations.
