98 Points – James Suckling
Cristal Rosé is Louis Roederer’s most exacting expression of rosé Champagne, sourced from estate vineyards in Aÿ, Avize and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. The 2014 combines ripe Pinot Noir with the chalk-driven precision of Chardonnay, producing a Champagne of striking tension and finesse that remains youthful more than a decade from harvest.
Blend: 55% Pinot Noir, 45% Chardonnay.
Tasting Notes: Wild raspberry, red currant and strawberry lead into delicate spice and floral notes, with subtle smoke and chalk adding complexity beneath the fruit. The palate is concentrated yet finely drawn, moving from a silky initial texture into vivid freshness, with a saline, mineral quality giving the finish remarkable persistence.
Structure: Precise and energetic, with Pinot Noir providing concentration and texture while Chardonnay contributes lift and mineral definition. The absence of malolactic fermentation preserves the wine’s freshness, while a fine, persistent mousse and restrained oak component give it depth without compromising tension.
Drink Window: Now–2045+. The 2014 is already compelling for its combination of ripe fruit, chalky freshness and fine texture, but it remains a Champagne with substantial development ahead. Roederer specifically considers Cristal Rosé capable of evolving for decades, gradually developing more candied, spicy and savory dimensions while retaining its finesse.
Decanting: No conventional decanting is necessary. Serve around 50–54°F in a generous tulip or white-wine glass and allow it time to unfold; Roederer’s own published review material notes that the 2014 benefits from roughly 30 minutes of air.
The 2014 Cristal Rosé has the depth and structure to be treated as a serious gastronomic wine rather than simply a celebratory pour. It is particularly persuasive with lobster, langoustines, richer fish preparations or game birds, while its combination of pedigree, vintage and long aging potential makes it equally compelling for a milestone gift or long-term Champagne cellar.
