93 Points – James Suckling
ARTEMIS is Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars’ Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, assembled from vineyard sites across the valley to combine Cabernet depth with an accessible, polished style. The 2022 shows the warmth and concentration of the vintage while retaining the balance and definition associated with the estate, and the magnum format provides additional scope for slow, graceful development.
Blend: 99% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Merlot.
Tasting Notes: Blackberry, cassis and ripe black cherry lead into violet, cocoa and espresso, with cedar and subtle baking spice adding complexity. The palate is generous and concentrated, with dark fruit carried by polished tannins and a savory, gently mineral note through the finish.
Structure: Full-bodied and Cabernet-driven, with ripe, well-integrated tannins providing shape without excessive weight. The 2022 has ample fruit through the mid-palate, balanced by enough freshness and structure to reward further bottle age, particularly in magnum.
Drink Window: 2027–2042+. The 2022 is approachable young but will benefit from additional time for its fruit, oak and tannins to knit together. In 1.5L format, expect a slower evolution and a longer plateau of maturity than in standard bottle.
Decanting: If opening now, give the magnum approximately 90 minutes to two hours of aeration, tasting periodically as it opens. Serve around 60–64°F in a generous Cabernet or Bordeaux glass.
The 1.5L format makes ARTEMIS especially well suited to a dinner or celebration where both presentation and generous service matter. It has the immediate richness to accompany grilled or roasted beef and lamb, while the magnum’s slower development makes it equally attractive for a cellar intended for future gatherings and milestone occasions.
