96 Points – Wine Spectator
A Third Growth of the 1855 Classification, Château Calon-Ségur is one of Saint-Estèphe’s historic reference points, traditionally associated with a structured, Cabernet-driven style built for long aging. The 1996 comes from an excellent Left Bank vintage and, after three decades in bottle, has reached the stage where its once-formidable structure is giving way to the cedar, tobacco and savory complexity of mature northern Médoc.
Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
Tasting Notes: Mature blackcurrant and dark cherry remain at the core, layered with cedar, cigar box, graphite and dried herbs. Leather, forest floor and subtle game notes emerge with air, while the palate retains freshness and definition beneath its tertiary complexity, finishing savory and persistent.
Structure: Medium to full-bodied, with the firm Cabernet framework of the vintage now substantially softened and integrated. Fresh acidity and remaining fine tannins preserve the wine’s shape, but its appeal today lies in balance, restraint and mature complexity rather than fruit concentration or power.
Drink Window: Now–2032. The 1996 is fully mature and should be approached as a wine to enjoy rather than one requiring further development. Impeccably stored bottles may hold beyond this range, but at 30 years of age provenance, fill level and storage history are more meaningful than a theoretical maximum lifespan.
Decanting: Stand the bottle upright for several hours, preferably overnight, to allow sediment to settle. Open carefully and taste before decanting; if the wine is sound, gently decant for sediment immediately before serving rather than exposing it to prolonged aeration.
The 1996 Calon-Ségur offers the particular appeal of mature Saint-Estèphe from a strong Cabernet vintage, with three decades of bottle age bringing the estate’s savory side fully into view. For collectors who appreciate traditionally structured Bordeaux at maturity, it is a compelling dinner bottle alongside roast lamb, beef, game, mushrooms or aged hard cheeses.
