99 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Château Montrose, a Second Growth of the 1855 Classification, produced one of the defining Left Bank wines of the unusually hot 2003 vintage. Its Saint-Estèphe terroir proved particularly well suited to the conditions, preserving freshness beneath the vintage’s richness and producing a Montrose of unusual generosity without sacrificing the estate’s formidable structure.
Blend: 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot.
Tasting Notes: Blackcurrant, blackberry and dark plum remain impressively present, moving into smoked tobacco, licorice, earth and savory herbs as the wine opens. The palate is deep and broad, with ripe dark fruit framed by graphite and cocoa notes, while mature but persistent tannins give the finish both authority and surprising freshness.
Structure: Full-bodied and powerful, yet unusually composed for such a warm vintage. The substantial Cabernet Sauvignon framework remains evident, while the relatively high proportion of Merlot brings breadth and suppleness; more than two decades of bottle age have softened the tannins without stripping the wine of its characteristic Saint-Estèphe grip.
Drink Window: Now–2050. The 2003 is firmly in its drinking window but remains remarkably vigorous for its age. More recent assessments continue to find considerable structure and longevity, making this a mature Bordeaux that can be enjoyed confidently today without urgency.
Decanting: Stand the bottle upright beforehand to settle any sediment. Decant gently for approximately 45–60 minutes, tasting as it develops; the 2003 still benefits from air, but measured aeration is preferable to an automatic multi-hour decant at this stage.
The 2003 Montrose is especially compelling because it combines the richness of an extreme vintage with a distinctly classical Saint-Estèphe backbone. For a mature Bordeaux dinner or serious cellar, it offers substantial depth today while retaining enough structure for further evolution—a particularly persuasive bottle alongside roast beef, lamb or game.
