Product Details
Brand: Ronchi di Cialla
From the secluded Cialla cru in Friuli Colli Orientali, Ronchi di Cialla has long been one of the reference-point estates for the region’s indigenous grapes, with a particular reputation for producing age-worthy, traditionally styled reds. The 2004 vintage came from a wet, cool summer that was steadied by fine weather from September onward, yielding healthy fruit and a wine of freshness, savory detail, and classical structure rather than sheer weight.
Blend: 100% Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso.
Tasting Notes: Aromas of red fruits, dried herbs, clove, and flinty mineral tones lead into a palate shaped by raspberry, blackcurrant, cocoa, spice, and a distinctly savory, lightly gamey character. With age, the wine develops more velvety texture and added complexity, while retaining the variety’s hallmark lift and earthy nuance.
Structure: Fresh and savory; medium- to full-bodied, with notable acidity and tannin in a refined, traditional frame.
Drink Window: Now–2028.
Decanting: For a mature bottle, decant gently for 30–45 minutes to allow the savory aromatics and spice tones to open without stripping away its tertiary nuance. Older bottles should be handled carefully to manage sediment.
This is a distinctive northern Italian red for collectors and drinkers who value authenticity, regional character, and the evolution of mature indigenous varieties in bottle. On the table, it offers real conversation value and a compelling alternative to more familiar cellar-aged reds, especially for those drawn to savory complexity over overt ripeness.
