A Fourth Growth of the 1855 Classification, Château Beychevelle is one of Saint-Julien’s best-known estates, producing a style traditionally associated with the commune’s balance of Médoc structure and refinement. The 2005 comes from a benchmark Bordeaux vintage and, after more than two decades in bottle, is now entering a mature phase where its remaining dark fruit is increasingly joined by cedar, tobacco and savory complexity.

Blend: 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot.

Tasting Notes: Blackcurrant, dark cherry and mature plum are layered with cedar, graphite and tobacco, followed by dried herbs, leather and subtle earthy notes. The palate is composed and increasingly supple, with dark fruit still present beneath the developing tertiary character and fine tannins carrying through a persistent, savory finish.

Structure: Medium to full-bodied, with Cabernet Sauvignon providing definition while the substantial Merlot component gives the wine breadth and a softer mid-palate. The tannins have mellowed considerably with age, though enough acidity and structure remain to preserve the wine’s shape and distinctly Médoc character.

Drink Window: Now–2035. The 2005 has reached an excellent stage for drinking, combining mature complexity with sufficient fruit and structure to continue developing. Well-stored bottles should hold comfortably for another decade, though provenance becomes increasingly important as the wine moves further into maturity.

Decanting: Stand the bottle upright for several hours beforehand to settle any sediment. Decant gently for approximately 20–30 minutes, or simply decant for sediment immediately before serving; at this age, there is little benefit in prolonged aeration.

The 2005 Beychevelle offers the particular appeal of mature Saint-Julien from one of Bordeaux’s strongest modern vintages, with enough bottle age for its classical secondary character to be fully emerging. It is an excellent choice for a Bordeaux-focused dinner, pairing naturally with roast lamb, prime beef, duck, game or mushroom dishes.
