Château Latour, a First Growth of the 1855 Classification, produced a formidable wine in 2005, one of the defining Left Bank vintages of its generation. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend and gives the wine its unmistakable Pauillac architecture: concentrated and powerful, yet remarkably precise, with two decades of bottle age only beginning to reveal the full complexity beneath its structure.

Blend: 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot and Petit Verdot.

Tasting Notes: Cassis, blackberry and dark plum remain concentrated at the core, layered with graphite, cedar, violet and cigar tobacco. Truffle, earth and savory spice are beginning to emerge with maturity, while the palate remains deep and remarkably fresh, with dark fruit, mineral intensity and a long, increasingly complex finish.

Structure: Full-bodied and authoritative, with substantial Cabernet-driven structure and finely textured tannins that have softened without losing their grip. The balance between concentration, acidity and tannin remains exceptional, giving the wine both presence today and considerable capacity for further evolution.

Drink Window: Now–2055+. The 2005 has entered a compelling early stage of maturity but remains far from fully evolved. It can be enjoyed now for its combination of fruit, power and emerging tertiary complexity, while another decade or more should bring greater cedar, truffle and savory nuance.

Decanting: If opening now, stand the bottle upright beforehand and decant for approximately 60–90 minutes, tasting periodically as it develops. The wine still has considerable structure, but at more than 20 years of age, controlled aeration is preferable to an aggressive multi-hour decant.

The 2005 Latour offers the increasingly uncommon combination of mature First Growth complexity and substantial development still ahead. For a serious cellar, milestone dinner or significant gift, it has the pedigree and longevity expected of Latour, while its current stage provides a fascinating intersection of youthful Cabernet intensity and the first mature signatures of great Pauillac.
