Château Léoville Las Cases, a Second Growth of the 1855 Classification, occupies an exceptional position at the northern edge of Saint-Julien, with its historic Grand Enclos adjoining Château Latour across the boundary with Pauillac. The 2005 is a particularly Cabernet-driven Las Cases, combining the concentration of this great Left Bank vintage with the estate’s characteristic restraint, precision and formidable structure.

Blend: 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc.

Tasting Notes: Cassis, blackberry and dark cherry remain concentrated at the core, joined by graphite, cedar and violet, with tobacco, anise and subtle earthy notes beginning to emerge. The palate is deep and controlled rather than opulent, with dark fruit, mineral definition and persistent savory detail extending through a long finish.

Structure: Full-bodied and firmly Cabernet-driven, with considerable concentration framed by dense, finely grained tannins and fresh acidity. Two decades of bottle age have brought greater integration, but the 2005 retains the tension and structural reserve of a wine built for a long evolution.

Drink Window: Now–2050+. The 2005 is entering a compelling early stage of maturity but remains youthful for Léoville Las Cases. It can be enjoyed today for its combination of concentrated fruit and emerging secondary complexity, while another five to ten years should bring greater aromatic breadth and a more fully resolved texture.

Decanting: If opening now, stand the bottle upright beforehand and decant carefully for approximately 60–90 minutes, tasting as it develops. The wine still benefits from aeration, but at this age a measured decant is preferable to prolonged exposure.

For collectors drawn to classical, long-lived Saint-Julien, the 2005 Léoville Las Cases has exceptional credentials: a benchmark estate, a highly successful vintage and a Cabernet-dominant composition that has evolved slowly. It is impressive now alongside roast beef or lamb, but remains equally persuasive as a bottle to hold for a future milestone dinner.
