Château Léoville Poyferré, a Second Growth of the 1855 Classification, produced a particularly complete wine in the exceptional 2005 vintage. It combines the château’s generous, polished expression of Saint-Julien with the Cabernet-driven structure of the year, and two decades of bottle age have begun to reveal mature complexity without diminishing its depth.

Blend: 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot.

Tasting Notes: Cassis, blackberry and dark plum remain concentrated at the core, joined by violet, pencil lead and cedar. With air, tobacco, licorice and subtle earthy notes emerge, while the palate shows ample dark fruit, savory depth and increasingly integrated tannins through a long, composed finish.

Structure: Full-bodied and concentrated, with Cabernet Sauvignon supplying the backbone and Merlot bringing breadth through the mid-palate. The once-formidable tannins have softened considerably but retain enough grip and freshness to give the wine definition and further aging potential.

Drink Window: Now–2045+. The 2005 is firmly entering its mature drinking phase, offering an attractive combination of remaining fruit and developing secondary character. Well-cellared bottles should continue to evolve for another two decades, gradually becoming more savory and texturally resolved.

Decanting: Stand the bottle upright beforehand to settle any sediment. If opening now, decant gently for approximately 45–60 minutes and follow the wine in the glass; at this age, measured aeration is preferable to an extended multi-hour decant.

The 2005 Léoville Poyferré is particularly compelling for collectors who want mature classified-growth Bordeaux that still retains substantial fruit and structure. It has the depth for further cellaring but is increasingly rewarding now, especially alongside roast beef, lamb or game at a dinner where mature Saint-Julien can take center stage.
