98 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.
Château Mouton Rothschild, elevated to First Growth status in 1973, produced a classically powerful Pauillac in the exceptional 2005 vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend, giving the wine formidable structure and definition, while the magnum format should have encouraged a slower evolution than standard bottles—particularly valuable for a vintage built around concentration, tannin and longevity.
Blend: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc.
Tasting Notes: Cassis, blackberry and dark cherry remain at the center, joined by graphite, cedar and violet, with cigar tobacco, licorice and savory spice developing as the wine opens. The palate is deep and layered, with concentrated dark fruit, mineral detail and increasingly complex secondary notes carried by persistent, finely textured tannins.
Structure: Full-bodied and firmly built, with a substantial Cabernet Sauvignon backbone and fresh acidity giving shape to the wine’s considerable concentration. The tannins have begun to soften with age, but in magnum the 2005 should retain more youthful tension and fruit than a comparable 750ML bottle.
Drink Window: Now–2055+. The 2005 is entering maturity, but magnum should place it on a slower trajectory than standard bottles. It can be enjoyed now for its combination of concentrated fruit and emerging cedar-and-tobacco complexity, while another decade or more of careful cellaring should reveal a more fully evolved expression.
Decanting: Stand the magnum upright well in advance to settle any sediment. If opening now, decant gently for approximately 90 minutes, tasting as it develops; because of the format and the wine’s remaining structure, meaningful aeration is appropriate, but there is no need for an aggressive multi-hour decant.
The combination of Mouton Rothschild, the benchmark 2005 vintage and magnum format gives this bottle particular appeal for long-term collectors and milestone occasions. It remains a serious cellar proposition, but opening one today offers the compelling experience of a First Growth beginning its transition from powerful Cabernet fruit toward the cedar, tobacco and savory complexity of mature Pauillac.
