94 Points – Wine Enthusiast
Poderi Luigi Einaudi’s “Nei Cannubi” comes from Cannubi, one of Barolo’s most historic and celebrated vineyard sites, situated in the heart of the commune of Barolo. Einaudi’s south- and southeast-facing holdings lie around 220 meters in elevation on the site’s characteristic marl soils, producing a Barolo noted for elegance, aromatic complexity and longevity.
Blend: 100% Nebbiolo.
Tasting Notes: Mature wild raspberry, dried cherry and plum are layered with rose petal, spice, tobacco, balsamic herbs and mineral notes. The palate retains impressive density and breadth, with firm yet increasingly resolved tannins, savory earth and hints of tar carrying through a long, composed finish. Wine Enthusiast particularly noted the wine’s combination of power, refinement, wild raspberry, spice and mineral character.
Structure: Powerful yet elegant, with firm Nebbiolo tannins, mature complexity and persistent mineral depth.
Drink Window: Drink now through 2032. At more than twenty years from vintage, well-stored bottles should be in a compelling mature phase, although Cannubi’s structure and the estate’s traditionally long-lived style can support further development. The producer specifically notes the site’s tannic structure and capacity for extended bottle aging.
Decanting: Stand the bottle upright for several hours before opening to allow sediment to settle. Decant carefully for approximately 30–45 minutes; with mature Barolo, the objective is gentle aeration and sediment removal rather than prolonged exposure to air.
The 2005 Nei Cannubi offers the particular pleasure of mature Barolo from one of Piedmont’s most storied vineyards. Its combination of dried fruit, florals, balsamic complexity and refined tannic structure makes it a natural companion to braised beef, game, porcini or truffle dishes, while its Cannubi provenance gives it the stature for an important dinner, thoughtful gift or mature Piedmont collection.
