Blend: 100% Montepulciano.

Tasting Notes: Black cherry and plum give way to dried flowers, licorice and Mediterranean herbs, with leather, earth and a gently ferrous character emerging as the wine opens. The palate remains energetic and distinctly savory, with mature fruit, fresh acidity and resolved but persistent tannins leading into a long, rustic-edged finish.

Structure: Medium to full-bodied, with Montepulciano’s natural depth balanced by notably vibrant acidity. More than a decade of bottle age has softened the tannins, but the wine retains the grip and vitality that allow Emidio Pepe’s reds to evolve so convincingly.

Drink Window: Now–2038. The 2012 is firmly in its drinking window, showing meaningful secondary development while retaining enough fruit and structure for further evolution. Well-stored bottles should continue to gain earthy and savory complexity rather than simply fade.

Decanting: Stand the bottle upright before opening and taste it first. If needed, decant gently for approximately 30 minutes to separate any sediment and allow the aromatics to unfold; prolonged aeration is unnecessary for a wine already entering maturity.
