95 Points – Robert Parker Jr., Wine Advocate
Roy Estate is a small, single-vineyard Napa property tucked into the hills on the eastern side of the valley, producing Cabernet Sauvignon in notably limited quantities. The 2014 shows the vintage’s supple character particularly well: concentrated and distinctly Napa in its dark fruit, yet increasingly refined after more than a decade in bottle.
Blend: 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot.
Tasting Notes: Cassis, blackberry and blueberry form the core, with floral notes giving way to tobacco, cedar, graphite and an earthy, savory dimension as the wine opens. The palate remains concentrated but composed, with dark fruit, subtle cocoa and well-integrated oak carried by silky tannins into a long, persistent finish.
Structure: Full-bodied and concentrated, yet more supple than imposing at this stage. The Petit Verdot contributes additional depth and structure, while extended maturation in new French oak is now increasingly integrated into the wine’s dark fruit and savory character.
Drink Window: Now–2034. The 2014 is entering an excellent stage of maturity, with its fruit still intact and its tannins considerably more integrated than in youth. Well-stored bottles should continue to develop gracefully, though there is little reason to postpone opening one today.
Decanting: Stand the bottle upright beforehand if possible, then decant gently for approximately 30–45 minutes. At this age, the goal is to separate any sediment and give the aromatics room to emerge rather than subject the wine to prolonged aeration.
With only 545 cases produced, the 2014 Roy Estate Cabernet Sauvignon offers the appeal of mature, small-production Napa Cabernet without sacrificing the depth that defined the wine in its youth. It is particularly well suited to a serious dinner or cellar selection, with enough richness for prime beef or lamb and enough savory development to work beautifully with mushrooms, braised short ribs or aged cheeses.
