2015 Domaine Michel Mallard et Fils, Corton "Le Rognet" Grand Cru, Burgundy -750ML

Domaine Michel Mallard et Fils is based in Ladoix-Serrigny at the northern end of the Côte de Beaune, with holdings extending into the Grand Cru vineyards of the Corton hill. Le Rognet lies high on the Ladoix side of Corton, and the excellent 2015 vintage gives this bottling the combination of ripe Pinot Noir fruit, depth and firm Grand Cru structure for which the hill is known.

Blend: 100% Pinot Noir.

Tasting Notes: Black cherry and ripe raspberry are joined by peony, licorice and subtle woodland notes, with earth, savory spice and a touch of game beginning to emerge after a decade in bottle. The palate has generous fruit but remains well defined, with mineral depth and increasingly integrated tannins carrying through a persistent, savory finish.

Structure: Full and firmly built for red Burgundy, with the breadth and tannic backbone characteristic of Corton balanced by fresh acidity. The 2015 vintage provides ample fruit around that structure, while a decade of bottle age has begun to soften the wine without diminishing its underlying power.

Drink Window: Now–2038. The 2015 is entering an appealing early stage of maturity, but Corton develops slowly and this should continue to gain complexity for another decade or more. Expect its fruit to become progressively more savory, earthy and sous-bois driven with further bottle age.

Decanting: If opening now, give the wine approximately 30–45 minutes of gentle aeration, tasting it before committing to a longer decant. Serve around 58–62°F in a generous Burgundy glass; with a decade of age, allowing it to evolve gradually in the glass is preferable to aggressive aeration.

For Burgundy collectors, this offers a compelling intersection of Grand Cru terroir, a strong Côte d’Or vintage and enough bottle age for Corton’s structure to begin relaxing. The 2015 has the depth for further cellaring but is increasingly attractive at the table today, particularly with duck, game birds, veal, mushrooms or simply prepared roast meats.
