96 Points – Antonio Galloni, Vinous
Ginestra Casa Maté is one of Elio Grasso’s defining Barolos, drawn from old Nebbiolo vines in the celebrated Ginestra MGA of Monforte d’Alba. The 2020 is somewhat more approachable than the powerful 2019, but it retains the site’s characteristic depth, balsamic complexity and firm structure, balancing ripe fruit with the freshness and aromatic detail of Nebbiolo.
Blend: 100% Nebbiolo.
Tasting Notes: Ripe cherry, raspberry and red plum lead into violet, licorice and dried herbs, with notes of balsamic spice, tobacco and earthy minerality emerging with air. The palate is focused and layered, carrying vivid red fruit through firm, finely textured tannins toward a long, savory finish.
Structure: Medium to full-bodied, with substantial yet well-integrated tannins and lively acidity providing a classical Barolo framework. The 2020 has notable depth without the sheer density of some vintages, giving it an appealing combination of structure, freshness and relative accessibility.
Drink Window: 2026–2045
Decanting: If opening now, decant for approximately 90 minutes to two hours, tasting periodically as the wine unfolds. Serve around 60–64°F in a generous Nebbiolo or Burgundy-style glass to emphasize its fragrance and detail.
Ginestra Casa Maté combines the muscular character of Monforte with Elio Grasso’s emphasis on balance and site expression. The 2020 is a strong cellar candidate but sufficiently expressive to reward drinking with proper aeration today, particularly alongside braised beef, tajarin with truffles, game, porcini or aged Piedmontese cheeses.
