Vigna Paganelli is Il Poggione’s single-vineyard Brunello Riserva, produced only in selected vintages from the estate’s oldest Sangiovese vines, planted in 1964. The 2020 combines the vineyard’s concentration and classical structure with the balance of the vintage, and in magnum it is particularly well positioned for a long, measured evolution in the cellar.
Blend: 100% Sangiovese
Tasting Notes: Black cherry, wild strawberry and ripe plum lead into violet, orange peel and Mediterranean herbs, with tobacco, cedar and savory spice emerging with air. The palate is concentrated yet energetic, with layered red and dark fruit framed by mineral nuances and firm, finely textured tannins through a long, persistent finish.
Structure: Full-bodied and firmly structured, with vibrant Sangiovese acidity providing lift to the wine’s considerable concentration. The tannins remain youthful and substantial, giving the 2020 the architecture for extended development without sacrificing balance or freshness.
Drink Window: 2028–2050+. In 750ML the 2020 is built for lengthy development, and the 1.5L magnum should evolve more slowly still. Properly stored, this is a compelling long-term cellar format, with its most complete expression likely still many years ahead.
Decanting: If opening the magnum now, decant for approximately two hours and follow its development in the glass; the wine remains young and structured. As it matures, reduce aeration accordingly and eventually decant primarily for sediment.
The combination of Vigna Paganelli’s old vines, Riserva-level selection and magnum format makes the 2020 particularly attractive for long-term cellaring or a future milestone dinner. This is Brunello with the structure to reward patience, while its scale and format make it equally compelling as a centerpiece bottle for a large table.
