90 Points – Vinous
L’Hospitalet de Gazin is the second wine of Château Gazin, drawn from the estate’s holdings on the Pomerol plateau. The 2020 captures the vintage’s combination of ripe fruit and freshness in a more immediately approachable expression than the Grand Vin, with Merlot providing generosity and the Cabernet varieties adding aromatic and structural definition.
Blend: Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Tasting Notes: Black cherry, plum and blackberry lead into violet, cocoa and dark spice, with subtle herbal and stony notes adding contrast. The palate is supple and generous without becoming heavy, with ripe fruit, fine-grained tannins and a lightly chalky, savory finish.
Structure: Medium-bodied and polished, with Merlot-driven roundness balanced by fresh acidity and fine tannic grip. The 2020 has enough concentration to develop further, but its smooth texture and absence of hard edges make it increasingly accessible now.
Drink Window: Now–2034. The wine has entered an attractive drinking phase, retaining ample fruit while beginning to settle into a more integrated expression. Further cellaring should bring additional savory complexity, though this is designed to mature earlier than Château Gazin’s Grand Vin.
Decanting: Give the wine approximately 30–45 minutes of aeration if opening now. Serve around 60–64°F in a Bordeaux glass; a moderate decant should be sufficient to open the aromatics and soften the remaining youthful tannins.
The 2020 L’Hospitalet de Gazin offers a particularly accessible route into Pomerol and the style of Château Gazin, with enough depth to feel serious while remaining inviting at the table. Its supple dark fruit and savory detail make it a natural partner for duck, roast lamb, beef or mushroom dishes, with no need for extended cellaring before enjoyment.
