Domaine Champeau is a family estate in Pouilly-sur-Loire, producing Sauvignon Blanc from the flint- and limestone-influenced terroirs associated with Pouilly-Fumé. The Vieilles Vignes bottling brings additional concentration and texture, while the cool 2021 vintage favors freshness, definition and a more restrained expression than warmer recent years.
Blend: 100% Sauvignon Blanc.
Tasting Notes: Green pear and white peach lead into elderflower and fresh herbs, with flint, wet stone and a subtle smoky note giving the wine its distinctly Loire character. The palate is crisp but not lean, with old-vine concentration providing texture around a firm line of acidity and a clean, mineral finish.
Structure: Medium-bodied, combining bright acidity with greater mid-palate substance than a simple Sauvignon Blanc. The 2021 vintage keeps the wine taut and focused, while the old-vine fruit provides enough depth to prevent the mineral profile from becoming austere.
Drink Window: Now–2029. At five years from harvest, the 2021 should be entering a particularly attractive phase, retaining freshness while gaining a little more texture and savory complexity. There is enough structure to hold for several more years, though its balance makes it ready to enjoy now.
Decanting: No extended decanting is necessary. Serve around 48–52°F in a white-wine glass and allow it to open naturally; avoid serving excessively cold, which can suppress the wine’s mineral and textural detail.
The 2021 Vieilles Vignes is a strong choice for drinkers who appreciate Sauvignon Blanc with mineral definition and restrained fruit rather than overt tropical character. Its freshness and added old-vine depth make it particularly versatile with oysters, shellfish, goat cheese, grilled fish or simply prepared poultry.
