90 Points – James Suckling
Villadoria is based in Serralunga d’Alba, and this comune-designated Barolo provides a direct expression of a village known for producing some of the denomination’s more structured and firmly tannic Nebbiolo. The highly regarded 2021 vintage gives the wine an appealing combination of aromatic clarity, freshness and the underlying backbone expected from Serralunga.
Blend: 100% Nebbiolo.
Tasting Notes: Dark cherry and red plum are joined by dried rose and violet, with notes of licorice, tobacco, spice and earthy truffle emerging with air. The palate is focused and savory, with fresh red fruit and subtle mineral character carried through a firm, persistent finish.
Structure: Medium to full-bodied, with bright acidity and youthful, assertive tannins providing a distinctly Serralunga profile. There is sufficient fruit through the middle to balance that structure, but the wine remains young and will benefit from further integration in bottle.
Drink Window: 2027–2040. The 2021 is still in its youthful phase, and another few years should allow the tannins to soften while developing greater savory and tertiary complexity. Well-cellared bottles should continue to evolve comfortably into the late 2030s.
Decanting: If opening now, decant for approximately 90 minutes to two hours to give the youthful tannins and aromatics time to unfold. Serve around 60–64°F in a generous Nebbiolo or Burgundy-style glass.
For drinkers looking for classically structured Barolo without moving immediately into single-MGA pricing, Villadoria’s Serralunga bottling makes a compelling proposition. The 2021 has the freshness and tannic architecture for the cellar, while sufficient aeration makes it a natural partner today for braised beef, game, mushroom or truffle dishes, and aged Piedmontese cheeses.
