San Sano is Antinori’s Gran Selezione expression of Gaiole in Chianti, sourced from a high-elevation estate reaching roughly 420–450 meters above sea level. The site’s rocky galestro and alberese soils and cooler eastern Chianti Classico setting give the 2022 a particularly vivid combination of ripe Sangiovese fruit, mineral tension and linear freshness.
Blend: 100% Sangiovese.
Tasting Notes: Ripe cherry, red plum and raspberry lead into violet, crushed stone, dried herbs and subtle savory spice. The palate is energetic and finely drawn, with juicy red fruit, chalky mineral detail and polished tannins carrying through a long, precise finish.
Structure: Medium- to full-bodied, vibrant and firmly structured, with fine tannins, bright acidity and pronounced mineral tension.
Drink Window: 2027–2045. Accessible with air today, but its balance of fruit, acidity and structure should support graceful development over the next two decades.
Decanting: Decant for 1–2 hours when opened young to soften the tannins and allow its floral, mineral and savory dimensions to emerge. With additional bottle age, 30–60 minutes should be sufficient.
San Sano will appeal to collectors looking for a more lifted, mineral-driven expression of Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. Its freshness and precision make it especially compelling alongside bistecca alla Fiorentina, roast lamb, wild game or aged Tuscan cheeses, while its pedigree and structure make it equally attractive as a cellar bottle for future special occasions.
