In 2021, Tignanello turns 50, half a century since Piero Antinori’s bold move to reimagine what Tuscany could be. This is more than anniversary hype; many critics believe 2021 is among the greatest vintages in Tignanello’s history, possibly the best yet under winemaker Renzo Cotarella.
Grown on the historic Tignanello vineyard in San Casciano in Val di Pesa, the vines sit at about 350‑400 meters above sea level, on limestone & galestro soils with southwestern exposure. The 2021 season brought a slow start (spring frost, cool dry periods), followed by ideal ripening conditions: warm but not excessive summer heat, good rainfall early, then fine, balanced conditions into September and October. This long hang time helped build both ripeness and aromatic complexity while preserving freshness.
Blend: ~79% Sangiovese, ~13% Cabernet Sauvignon, ~8% Cabernet Franc.
Aging: around 17 months in wood (some new French oak, some neutral), a period of malolactic fermentation in oak, then bottle aging before release.
When & How to Enjoy It: This is not really a “pop‑and‑go” wine (though even now, decanting helps it open). Best cellaring will reward you: drinking window roughly 2025 through 2045, with some drinkability earlier if you like more jeunesse and structure.
