Krug Grande Cuvée 173ème Édition reflects the house’s ambition to create a Champagne of exceptional breadth and complexity through the art of blending. Composed around the 2017 harvest and enriched by reserve wines from earlier years, this edition brings together the freshness of Chardonnay, the structure of Pinot Noir and the expressive fruit of Meunier. Extended aging in Krug’s cellars gives the wine its characteristic combination of layered richness, fine texture and remarkable energy.
Blend: 44% Pinot Noir, 34% Chardonnay and 22% Meunier. A blend of 150 wines from 13 different years, with the youngest from 2017 and the oldest from 2001; reserve wines account for approximately 31% of the final composition.
Tasting Notes: Ripe citrus, baked apple and yellow plum mingle with toasted brioche, hazelnut, honey and delicate spice. The palate is generous yet precise, revealing layers of orchard fruit, candied citrus and lightly roasted notes. Fine bubbles and fresh acidity carry the wine toward a long, savory finish with subtle saline and mineral detail.
Structure: Full-bodied and richly textured for Champagne, with considerable depth supported by vibrant acidity and a remarkably fine mousse. The interplay of mature reserve wines and younger components creates a compelling balance between developed complexity and youthful freshness.
Drink Window: Enjoy now through approximately 2040. Already rewarding for its layered fruit and mature nuances, the 173ème Édition has the structure and balance to develop additional toasted, nutty and savory complexity with careful cellaring.
Serving: Serve around 48–54°F in a generous tulip-shaped Champagne or white Burgundy glass. Allow the wine to warm slightly in the glass to reveal its full aromatic range and layered texture.
Krug Grande Cuvée 173ème Édition is a Champagne for occasions when the wine deserves a central place at the table. Its richness, precision and remarkable versatility make it an excellent partner for lobster, roast chicken, turbot, aged Comté or dishes featuring mushrooms and truffles. It is equally compelling as a thoughtful gift or a bottle to enjoy over a leisurely dinner.
