94 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Domaine Marcel Deiss is based in Bergheim, at the heart of Alsace, and Altenberg de Bergheim is one of the estate’s defining Grand Cru sites. This 2004 bottling comes from a warm, limestone-rich Grand Cru terroir and reflects Deiss’s hallmark approach to complantation, producing a wine of richness, aromatic complexity, and striking mineral balance.
Blend: Traditional Alsace field blend; Deiss’s Altenberg de Bergheim is planted with multiple Alsace varieties, led by the classic Grand Cru grapes of Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, and related Alsace varieties.
Tasting Notes: Deeply aromatic, with notes of honey, orange peel, marmalade, candied citrus, peach preserve, baking spice, lily, and a subtle patisserie-like richness. The palate is broad, polished, and gently sweet in impression, carrying layers of ripe stone fruit, citrus liqueur, honeyed spice, and nutty depth, all lifted by mineral tension and a refined chalky finish.
Structure: Rich, complex, and mature, with residual sweetness balanced by acidity, minerality, and impressive lift.
Drink Window: 2012–2032; now fully mature, with well-stored bottles best enjoyed over the near term.
Decanting: Stand the bottle upright before service. Decant gently for sediment only, or open 15–20 minutes before serving in large white-wine stems. Avoid extended decanting, as mature Alsace Grand Cru can lose aromatic nuance with too much air.
Now entering a beautifully mature phase, this is a distinctive Alsace Grand Cru for collectors and thoughtful dining. Its honeyed depth and mineral freshness make it especially compelling with foie gras, washed-rind cheeses, roast poultry, spiced cuisine, or a refined dessert course built around citrus, orchard fruit, or almond.
