Fontodi is one of the most respected estates in Chianti Classico, renowned for its meticulous organic farming and precision winemaking under Giovanni Manetti. While best known for Sangiovese, the estate’s small-production Pinot Nero from the high-elevation Case Via vineyard in Panzano reflects a Burgundian inspiration interpreted through Tuscan terroir. In the warm 2017 vintage, careful vineyard management preserved freshness, resulting in a Pinot Noir that balances ripeness with lifted aromatics and refined structure.
Blend: 100% Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir)
Tasting Notes:
Fragrant aromas of wild strawberry, red cherry, dried rose petal, and forest floor rise from the glass, layered with hints of orange peel, spice, and subtle oak. The palate is silky and finely detailed, showing bright red fruit, crushed herbs, and a touch of earthy minerality. Gentle tannins and vibrant acidity carry the wine to a poised, lingering finish.
Structure: Elegant and finely textured with balanced acidity and supple tannins.
Drink Window: 2023–2032
Decanting:
Decant for 20–30 minutes when young to allow the delicate aromatics and subtle earth tones to open fully. Serve slightly below room temperature for optimal expression.
A rare and thoughtful expression of Pinot Noir from one of Tuscany’s benchmark estates, the 2017 Case Via offers collectors and Burgundy enthusiasts an intriguing intersection of Italian terroir and Burgundian grape tradition—refined, distinctive, and produced in very limited quantities.
