94 Points – James Suckling.
Magari comes from Gaja’s Ca’Marcanda estate in Bolgheri, where the family applies its precision-focused approach to the Bordeaux varieties that thrive along Tuscany’s Mediterranean coast. The 2022 is a Cabernet Franc-led expression, combining ripe dark fruit with aromatic lift, savory Mediterranean character and the polished structure associated with Ca’Marcanda.
Blend: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.
Tasting Notes: Black cherry, blackberry and cassis lead into violet, Mediterranean herbs and graphite, with touches of licorice and spice emerging with air. The palate is concentrated yet fresh, carrying ripe dark fruit through fine tannins toward a savory, mineral-tinged finish.
Structure: Medium to full-bodied, with polished tannins and fresh acidity providing definition to the generous fruit. Cabernet Franc contributes aromatic lift and savory character, while Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot bring depth, structure and persistence.
Drink Window: 2026–2038. The 2022 has sufficient fruit and polish to be enjoyed young with aeration, while its tannic structure and freshness should support rewarding development over the next decade.
Decanting: If opening now, decant for approximately 45–60 minutes to allow the youthful fruit, tannins and savory elements to integrate. Serve slightly below room temperature in a generous Bordeaux-style glass.
Magari offers a distinctly Bolgheri expression of the Gaja family’s winemaking philosophy, pairing Mediterranean ripeness with restraint and structural precision. It is a strong choice for dinner or medium-term cellaring, particularly alongside roast lamb, grilled beef, wild boar ragù or aged Tuscan cheeses.
