Pian delle Vigne is Antinori’s Montalcino estate, located southwest of the historic town and dedicated to a refined, traditionally grounded expression of Brunello. The 2021 shows the freshness and aromatic definition of the vintage particularly well, combining ripe Sangiovese fruit with fine tannins and a more lifted, precise profile than the warmer 2020.
Blend: 100% Sangiovese.
Tasting Notes: Red cherry and wild strawberry are joined by blood orange, floral notes and subtle balsamic tones, followed by menthol, tobacco and spice. The palate is elegant and energetic, with fresh red fruit, savory detail and finely textured tannins leading into a long, persistent finish.
Structure: Medium to full-bodied, with vibrant acidity and refined but still youthful tannins. Maturation in large oak casks supports breadth and complexity without obscuring the purity of the Sangiovese, giving the wine a classical balance of fruit, freshness and savory structure.
Drink Window: 2027–2045. The 2021 has sufficient fruit and polish to be approached earlier with aeration, but its freshness and tannic framework favor several additional years in bottle. Expect increasing notes of dried cherry, tobacco, leather and underbrush as it develops.
Decanting: If opening now, decant for approximately 60–90 minutes to allow the youthful tannins and aromatics to unfold. Serve around 60–64°F in a generous Sangiovese or Burgundy-style glass.
The 2021 Pian delle Vigne offers a polished expression of Brunello with enough structure for serious cellaring while retaining the aromatic freshness that makes Sangiovese so compelling at the table. It is equally suited to a future cellar selection or a substantial dinner alongside bistecca alla Fiorentina, roast lamb, wild boar, porcini or aged Pecorino.
